Plus is a personal plan. OpenAI says Free, Go and Plus "are designed to be used by individuals" (pricing FAQ). When an employee uses their own Plus account for work, the account, the chat history and the settings belong to them, not the business.

Two differences matter most for an owner:

  • Training. On personal plans, OpenAI may use your conversations to train its models unless the person turns off "Improve the model for everyone" (OpenAI help). OpenAI says it doesn't train on Business workspace data by default (Data controls).
  • Control. Business adds an admin console, central billing and SAML SSO (Business pricing). When someone leaves, you remove their seat. With a personal account, there's nothing to remove.

The math for a 25-person office where 6 people use ChatGPT: 6 seats × $20 × 12 = $1,440 a year on annual billing, or $1,800 on monthly. Six personal Plus seats cost the same $1,440, with none of the control.

Before you buy, check

  1. Who's paying now. Look at expense reports and company cards for "OpenAI" charges.
  2. What people want to keep. People can merge personal chats into Business, but the merge can't be undone and their old Plus subscription is canceled. Tell them to export anything personal first (OpenAI migration guide).
  3. Annual vs. monthly. Annual saves $5 per seat per month, but you're committed. Start monthly if you're unsure who'll keep using it.
