How to Think Clearly in an AI-Shaped World
AI amplifies both good and bad decisions. The cost of poor judgment is rising. This is less about tools and more about the thinking that decides whether those tools make things better or worse.

The Problem with Confident Decisions
Bad outcomes often come from reasonable decisions made with incomplete mental models. Not stupidity — incompleteness. The model you have of how things work governs what actions seem reasonable. If the model is wrong, the actions can be confidently, systematically wrong.
The goal isn't to be less confident. It's to be calibrated: confident when you have evidence, uncertain when you don't, and aware of which situation you're actually in. These are different skills.
Why Intelligence Doesn't Prevent Bad Decisions
The elephant and the rider: the intuitive mind (the elephant) makes decisions fast, and the rational mind (the rider) mostly rationalizes them after the fact. Intelligence is excellent at building arguments for whatever you already believe. Smarter people build more convincing arguments for their pre-existing positions.
Falsifiability is the antidote: 'What would have to be true for me to be wrong?' If you can't answer that question cleanly, you're rationalizing, not reasoning. This is one of the most useful single-question practices in complex decisions.
Common Thinking Traps
Trust first impressions: the first frame you adopt for a problem becomes the one you optimize against. Early framing is load-bearing and mostly invisible.
Outdated mental models: the world changes faster than mental models update. A model that was accurate in 2020 may be wrong now — and you won't notice until something breaks.
Narrative over evidence: a compelling story suppresses the need to check whether it's true. 'It makes sense' and 'it's true' are different standards, and we frequently confuse them.
React to what you see on the surface → miss the underlying structure. Rely on incomplete mental models → make confident decisions that go wrong. Optimize for tools instead of judgment → execute solutions that don't actually work.
Update the Model, Not Just the Rules
Tools change every six months. Judgment doesn't. The goal is a better model of how the world actually works — not a set of rules to memorize and apply.
Seek the argument against your own idea before you commit. Build a skeptic's council: the financial lens, the growth lens, the pragmatic lens, the customer lens, and the contrarian lens. You can run all five in your own head in five minutes. The ones that find problems are the valuable ones.
AI Amplifies Whatever You Bring
AI provides detailed analysis instantly, which can substitute for the kind of slow deliberation that catches bad assumptions. Fast answers feel justified. The rigor isn't in the speed — it's in the question you asked.
The discipline: run a premortem before you commit. Ask AI to take the other side of your argument. Use the speed of AI to generate options, not to validate the first option. The model doesn't know which option is right — it knows which option is plausible given your prompt.
