Custom Integration Development

Workato and Boomi integrations for mid-market businesses that outgrew manual data transfers.

Mid-market companies doing $10M+ in annual revenue across ecommerce, non-profit, and EDI-heavy industries needed custom integration layers that their out-of-the-box platforms couldn't provide. Built with Workato and Boomi to connect ERP, accounting, and operational systems without the manual handoffs.

Executive Summary

As part of work through Eide Bailly, Blake developed custom integration workflows using Workato and Boomi for clients across ecommerce, non-profit, and EDI vendor use cases — all generating $10M or more in annual revenue. These weren't template-based connectors. Each integration was purpose-built to handle the specific data flows, transformation logic, and error-handling requirements that each business's operating model demanded.

Situation

Native connectors weren't enough. Manual processes were filling the gaps.

Mid-market businesses at this revenue level have typically accumulated a stack of operational systems — ERP, accounting platform, storefront, fulfillment, donor management, or EDI network — that each work well independently but don't talk to each other cleanly. The gaps between systems get filled with manual exports, spreadsheet transforms, and staff time.

At $10M+ in revenue, that manual overhead becomes a real cost. Ecommerce businesses were reconciling order data manually. Non-profits were exporting fund accounting entries by hand. Companies with EDI vendors were doing manual data translation on each transaction cycle. The systems existed. The integration layer didn't.

Use Cases

Three categories of integration work.

Ecommerce

Order-to-cash integration between storefront, fulfillment, and accounting systems. Eliminated manual reconciliation of sales data across platforms.

Non-Profit

Fund accounting and donor data flows between CRM and ERP. Automated the manual export-and-import cycle that consumed finance staff time each month.

EDI Vendors

Custom EDI transaction handling to connect vendor data feeds into the client ERP. Replaced manual data translation with automated, validated record creation.

Approach

Map the data flow. Build the transform. Validate before it touches production.

Each integration started with a data mapping exercise — what comes out of System A, how it needs to be transformed, and what System B expects to receive. This step surfaces the business logic that's usually buried in spreadsheet formulas or in someone's institutional knowledge.

Workato and Boomi provide the orchestration layer, but the real work is in the recipe or flow logic: handling edge cases, error routing, deduplication, and transformation rules that reflect how the business actually processes data — not how an off-the-shelf connector assumes it should.

Every integration was validated in a sandbox environment against representative data before being promoted to production. Error handling was built in from the start, with alerting configured so that failed records surface to the right team rather than silently dropping.

Business Outcome

Manual data handoffs replaced with automated, validated flows.

Across each engagement, the manual export-transform-import cycle that had consumed staff time each week was replaced with an automated flow that ran on a defined schedule with built-in error handling.

For ecommerce clients, order-to-cash data reconciliation moved from a weekly manual process to near-real-time. For non-profits, finance staff recaptured hours previously spent on month-end data transfers. For EDI-dependent businesses, transaction processing became reliable and auditable rather than dependent on individual effort each cycle.

Best Fit

This case study is relevant if your business...

  • Does $10M+ in annual revenue and has multiple systems that don't talk to each other
  • Has staff manually exporting and importing data between platforms on a recurring basis
  • Runs ecommerce, non-profit, or EDI-heavy operations with complex data flows
  • Has tried native connectors but found they don't handle your specific business logic
  • Needs a custom integration layer built and validated before it touches production data
